Abstract

Laboratory strain Heliothis zea (Boddie) females were crossed with irradiated (10 krad) and nonirradiated males. Progeny from these crosses were studied to determine the effects of inherited sterility on the ability of H. zea to initiate, maintain, and break diapause, and the effects of diapause on the fecundity and fertility of emerging adults from different genetic stock. There was no interaction between inherited sterility and diapause with regard to depth of pupation, initiation or termination of diapause, egg hatch, fecundity, or survival. Diapause had no significant effect on egg hatch; however, crosses involving moths that emerged from diapaused pupae produced significantly fewer eggs.
