Abstract

Track formation in an island gold film on the surface of a LiF single crystal was studied by means of transmission electron microscopy. Irradiation by Pb ions with an energy of 4.48 MeV/nucleon was carried out at the angles of 0.5° and 2° with respect to the crystal surface. The quantity and shape of the islands removed from the surface during the track formation process was investigated with the help of collectors. Possible track formation mechanisms are discussed.
