Abstract

Vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra are reported for d(GC) 20·d(GC) 20 and d(ATGCATGCAT)·d(ATGCATGCAT) in D 2O without Mn 2+ and in the presence of 0.64 and 0.50 [Mn]/[P] concentration ratios, respectively. Changes in the VCD spectra are compared with the changes of the corresponding infrared absorption bands and interpreted in terms of structural changes in the oligonucleotides. Based on these examples, it appears that VCD provides better definition of structural modification as a result of complexation with Mn 2+ ions than infrared absorption.
