Abstract

Summary CCC alone (2.5g·1 -1 ) or in combination with a nutrient solution rich in P(7.0g·1 -1 NaH 2 PO 4 ), K4.0g°1 -1 KC1) and B (1.5 g°1 -1 H 3 BO 3 ) accompanied by 1.5g·1 -1 Ca (NO 3 ) 2 · 4H 2 O, 2.5 g ·1 −1 MgSO 4 · 7H 2 O,100 mg · 1 −1 ZnSO 4 · 7H 2 O,15 mg · 1 −1 FeEDTA and 15mg · l −1 Na 2 MoO 4 , were sprayed three times on red beet foliage starting with the onset of root swelling. The sucrose content showed no difference between the control and the material sprayed with the mineral solution. Plants treated with CCC and with CCC in combination with the nutrient solution showed a significant increase of sucrose in the roots. CCC appears to stimulate sucrose synthesis, probably via stimulation of sucrose synthetase. It also seems evident that CCC stimulates sink activity in roots.
