Abstract
Measurements of the magneto-optical birefringence (Δn) and the magnetisation curves in magnetite fluids are reported. The variation of Δn with H2, which is not linear at low fields, is found to arise from particle interactions. Also the effect of magnetic filtration on magnetisation curves and birefringence is studied.
