Abstract

Certain agrochemicals which contain heterocyclic structures, NCS groups and alkylamino chains may react with molecular iodine to form complexes of the charge transfer type. We investigated here the chemical interaction between iodine and dazomet or tetrahydro‐3,5‐dimethyl‐2H‐1,3,5‐thiazidine‐2‐thione. Accidental ingestion of this compound which has a formation constant of 700 I.mole−1 (at 20°C) for its complex with molecular iodine may thus lead to effects on thyroid metabolism. The results are discussed in the general context of the potential thyroid toxicity of agrochemicals.
