Abstract
The nature of the magnetic interaction between two magnetic impurities in a metal that are coupled through a direct transfer integral is studied using a numerical-simulation technique. It is found that the impurities never display ferromagnetic correlations, confirming the results of a perturbation-theoretic calculation by Gottlieb and Suhl and in contradiction with other studies. The uniform spin and staggered charge susceptibilities dominate as the localized level approaches the Fermi level. The consequences of these findings are discussed.
