Abstract
Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is known to stimulate the growth and proliferation of various cells through interaction with its receptors (EGFR) [1–3]. In esophageal carcinoma, it has been reported that many squamous cell carcinomas express a large number of EGF receptors [4–7]. Furthermore, it has been suggested that the patients with EGF receptor-positive tumor has a worse prognosis than those with EGF receptor-negative tumors [6–7]. Thus, the expression of EGF receptors have been a focus of attention to be a significant prognostic indicator for esophageal carcinoma. However, as for the EGF, there had been no agreement regarding the effect of EGF on the progression of esophageal carcinoma in vivo and in vitro [3–9].
