Abstract

Multi-terminal high voltage direct current (MTDC) systems based on voltage source converters (VSCs) are increasingly utilized. In such a case, dynamic interactions among different terminals through DC networks which may lead to the instability of the system become one of the leading problems. This paper analyzed the interactions among different terminals based on the concepts of self-stabilizing and en-stabilizing in DC voltage time scale. According to the proposed frequency-domain small signal model of MTDC-linked VSCs, interactions are described by self-stabilizing and en-stabilizing through different paths classified by the quantity of interacted devices. Moreover, the effect of interactions to the stability of the system can be estimated using the proposed relationships between self-stabilizing/en-stabilizing and damping in an MTDC system. The interaction analysis can provide a deeper understanding of oscillation mechanism.
