Abstract

Ryan (1947) predicted that performance would be a function of the effects of the interaction of motivation, ability and environment. His prediction was tested by using instructions and distracting noise as the independent variables. Activation (auditory flutter threshold) and performance were both affected, although differentially. Ss of high ability were more activated under high—than low—motivating conditions.
