Abstract

IntroductionThe term microbiota refers to the community of living microorganisms gathered in a particular ecological niche. The normal microbiota is the set of microorganisms that coexist with the host without causing disease. EpidemiologyThe initial composition of the microbiota of the gastrointestinal tract is determined from birth, with numerous factors modulating and conditioning both the quantity and quality and vary appreciably throughout the life. EthiopathogenyIn a wide variety of serious pathologies there is a loss of intestinal barrier function, with the consequent entry and translocation of bacteria as bacterial products from the gut lumen to other extraintestinal territories. TreatmentProbiotics are food supplements composed of living microorganisms that can improve the microbial balance by being employed in pathologies such as infectious diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease as well as in critical patients to reduce the incidence of infectious complications.
