Abstract

The development of inter-twin relationships is examined. The one human being who is most constantly present within a twin's range of perception during the years of growth is his co-twin. Inter-twin identification develops through the twins' observations of each other and the attitudes of the surrounding people. Strong inter-twin dependence will repress individual personality development, and though twins can support each other in many ways, some mental health problems may be exacerbated by twinship, the main risk factors being high inter-twin dependence and pronounced submissiveness. Some conclusions regarding the upbringing of twins may be drawn from the personality development data and psychiatric risk factors, the most important being that the parents should have a strong enough bond to both twins, that they should encourage the individual development of both and strengthen the self-esteem of the submissive member.
