Abstract

Most scholarly work on women's development assumes or documents the "reproduction of mothering." The existence of women who resist motherhood challenges universalizing assumptions advanced by these theories. This article draws on the life stories of 34 intentionally childless married women to paint a more contradictory picture of women's development that allows for the variations in desires, talents, and orientations that actually occur among women.
