Abstract

Grid-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) are gaining increasing consideration over the last few years since their connection has been shown to improve the dynamic behavior of the power grid. However, existing Intentional Controlled Islanding (ICI) approaches do not consider the changes in structure and operation that modern power systems are experiencing due to the increasing integration of grid-scale BESSs. In this paper a previously proposed ICI algorithm (for minimal power-flow disruption) is modified to consider the impact of BESSs on the power system. More specifically, the proposed modified ICI algorithm aims to determine the optimal islanding solution that minimizes the power imbalance between the generation (i.e., synchronous generators and the BESSs) and the consumption (i.e., loads and BESSs) within each island. This is achieved through determining the island that each BESS should be, and the optimal active power set-points for the BESSs that minimize the power imbalance in the formed islands.
