Abstract

Assuming that the oxygen red lines are excited through the dissociative recombination of molecular oxygen ions in the ionosphere, the time-variations in the emission intensity are calculated from the basis of the ionospheric data. The results agree fairly well with the observations in temperate latitudes. It is suggested from the present study that the abundance of molecular oxygen in the upper atmosphere varies considerably from night to night.
