Abstract

The band strength of the 0,0 band of the a 3Π- X 1Σ transition of CO has been determined from measurements of the equivalent widths of a number of resolved rotational lines. Equivalent widths were converted to line strengths using a Doppler curve of growth. The total band strength is given by S = S′(1 + K 2), where S′ represents the contribution to the intensity from mixing of 1Π states with the a 3Π state and K determines the contribution from mixing of 1Σ states with the a 3Π state. The value of K if K = 0.04 ± 0.015. The band strength is S 0.0 = 3.56 ± 0.24 cm −1/cm-Amagat, which corresponds to an oscillator strength of f 0.0 = (1.50 ± 0.1) × 10 −7. An average radiative lifetime of the a 3Π state is calculated to be 9.51 ± 0.63 msec.
