Abstract At this time there is an almost general consensus that at least a few Herbig-Haro (H-H) objects correspond to the 'head' of jets ejected from young stars (or protostars). Even though bow shock nodels quite successfully predict some of the observational characteristics of these H-H objects, it is not entirely clear whether or not other shocks (e.g., the shock at the 'working surface' of the jet) also contribute to the observed emission. In order to evaluate the possible contribution of shocks other than the bow shock to the emitted spectrum, models for the head of a nonadiabatic jet are computed. The results obtained show that for many model parameters both the working surface and the cocoon of the jet do indeed contribute quite substantially to the predicted emission spectrum.
