Abstract

This article summarizes briefly the results obtained within the symmetrized approach to intensity-based computer binocular stereo vision, considering it as a problem of optimal statistical estimation of digital terrain model (DTM) from a given stereo pair of images. This approach was proposed by the author in 1972–1979 and then extended to take into account main geometric and photometric characteristics of the binocular stereo vision: symmetry of both channels, nonuniform intensity distortions over the images, limited possibilities for binocular perception of the terrain, and inherent ambiguity of the DTM estimation from the stereo pair.
