Abstract
In preliminary experiments it was observed that the amount of remote masking that appears for low frequencies in the presence of high-frequency noise was dependent upon band width in the noise. To specify this relation two series of noise bands were used; one with a lower cutoff at 1000 cps and upper cutoff at from 1500 to 5000 cps, and the other with a lower cutoff at 2000 cps and the upper cutoff at from 2500 to 6000 cps. In both series the band width was increased in 3-db steps and the resulting bands were presented at various combinations of spectrum level and over-all level. The results indicate that: (1) with spectrum level held constant, remote masking increases directly with band width; (2) with over-all level held constant, remote masking varies inversely with band width; with band width held constant, remote masking increases with over-all level (or spectrum level). The slopes of relations (1) and (2) equal one, while the slope for relation (3) equals two.
