R. W. Abstract Laboratory intensity measurements of the R(0) absorption lines in the weak and 40 dipoleallowed bands of hydrogen deuteride have been made. The measurements enable HD, and hence deuterium, abundances to be determined for planetary atmospheres from observations of RD lines in planetary spectra; one such observation has recently been made in the spectrum of Jupiter. The pressure broadening of the RD lines by H2 has been determined, and this should aiso be useful in the interpretation of planetary spectra.
