Abstract

Crystals of CsMgCl 3 doped with Er 3+ exhibit up-conversion luminescence when pumped (pulsed excitation) at wavelengths corresponding to near UV absorptions of the Er 3+ ion (380 and 360 nm). The effect which appears to result from two-photon absorption at a single Er 3+ ion is particularly strong at 380 nm. The up-conversion luminescence arises from the 2I 13 2 (V) and 4G 7 2 (T) excited states which occur at 40800 and 36200 cm −1, respectively.
