Abstract

Summary form only given. The spatial light modulator (SLM) is a powerful tool for generation and application of ultrashort laser pulses. However, conventional SLM's which are made of liquid crystals can not be applied to intense laser pulses because of their low damage threshold. We have developed a novel SLM that consists of a one-dimensional array of fused-silica plates. Since the fused silica is transparent over a wide range of spectrum, the device can be applied not only to the fundamental wave but also to the second and third harmonic of Ti:sapphire lasers. The fused-silica SLM is a unique and robust device for dispersion compensation of high-intensity femtosecond laser pulses.
