Intelligent transportation systems, un-signalized road intersections and traffic congestion in Johannesburg: a systematic review

Abstract

Johannesburg is a highly populated city situated in the Gauteng province of South Africa. It is well known for its economic prowess and sophisticated infrastructure. The major drawback of living in Johannesburg is the problem of traffic congestion. Traffic congestion is a hindrance to any developing society. In the past few decades, the South African Government spent millions of Rands on state-of-the-art traffic signal equipment. This paper presents a critical review of an intelligent transportation system, un-signalized road intersections and traffic congestions problems in the city of Johannesburg, South Africa. Traffic congestion has been a major menace in under-developed and developed countries of the world. Most countries are struggling on how to deal with the issue of road traffic congestion. With recent discoveries and new innovative methods in intelligent transportation systems, traffic congestions at an un-signalized road intersection are now becoming a problem of the past, especially in Johannesburg roads. This research provides solution to underlying strategic issues affecting traffic congestion at an un-signalized road intersection in the city, using intelligent transportation system.
