Abstract

Due to the noticeable increase in population and the number of moving vehicles in the streets in big cities, intelligent transportation system in smart city would be a good solution that leads to a comfortable life for the citizens and to reduce the traffic congestions. This paper presents an Intelligent Transportation System in Smart Cities (ITSSC) for managing traffic congestion at intersections and accident detection as a special case. This work counts on the notion of Internet of Things (IoT) and Global Positioning System (GPS) in which a base station receives packets from moving vehicles to calculate the number of vehicles in each street and/or detect an accident occurrence. The ITSSC works on the collected information and analyzes it and then uses a prioritization method to control the function of the traffic light in a way that decides when the traffic light will open (green light) and for how long time. The achieved results show that the ITSSC decreased the total average needed time at each traffic light in order to free or at least decrease the number of waiting cars at that traffic light compared to the traditional traffic lights. In addition to that the average waiting time for each car at a traffic light is decreased by 28% compared with the traditional traffic lights.
