Abstract

This paper explores the magic of intelligent sensors. To understand what intelligent sensors are, first we should know what a sensor is. A sensor is a device that measures a physical quantity and converts it into a signal which can be read by an observer or by an instrument. Intelligent sensors are an extension of traditional sensors to those with advanced learning and adaptation capabilities. The intelligent sensor system reconfigures and performs the necessary data interpretation, fusion of data from multiple sensors and the validation of local and remotely collected data. Intelligent sensors therefore contain embedded processing functionality that provides the computational resources to perform complex sensing and actuating tasks along with high level applications. The functions of an intelligent sensor system can be described in terms of compensation, information processing, communications and integration. The existing research applications of intelligent sensors include bushfire response, intelligent transportation, realtime health monitoring, unmanned aerial vehicle for surveillance, robotic landmine detection and many more.
