Abstract

This paper investigates the sequence dependent set-up times problem for a flexible multi-setting machine where part number N involved is relatively large (N<50). There are many applications where set-up times are important factors and also depends on the order of operations. An intelligent ordering of sequences attempt to minimize total set-up times. This process involves, firstly, a rational classification of parts into similar groups whereby the total set-ups required are reduced. Secondly, finding the best sequence for minimization of total set-up times. The paper proposes a novel idea where jobs are classified by using Grossberg neural network. The classified parts are then used to optimize the total set-up times by using Hopfield neural network.
