Abstract
The careful integration of intelligent knowledge-based systems (IKBS) can help to solve the problem of growing planning and scheduling complexity. Based on the project we are conducting for a medium-sized high-tech manufacturing company, this article presents the first lessons we learned and the first results we got investigating practical applications of knowledge engineering. The following issues are considered: when did we find the knowledge engineering approach justified to solve planning and scheduling problems; what did we do to support a typical manufacturing decision like: “Do I make or do I buy a part”; how do we organize our projects and which tools are we using.
