Abstract
Modern industrial processes are increasingly complex and managed by limited personnel resources. On the other hand technological development in various fields offers new possibilities for process management. For example fieldbuses, improved electronics and new integration techniques have enabled extensive decentralization of functions in modern automation systems. However, the features of modern technologies are not really exploited yet. This paper discusses the possibilities of exploiting intelligent field devices as part of hierarchical process monitoring system. The monitoring system and some preliminary results are also described.
