Abstract

This paper deals with the development of an intelligent, Ethernet based, open architecture controlled machine tool. With rapid advancement in automation technologies, remote control of manufacturing systems is likely to gain greater ground in the coming years. PC-based, open architecture controllers help bridge the gap between traditional manufacturing systems and remote controlled systems. This paper presents an attempt to develop a three-axis machine tool with an artificial intelligence module to predict machine performance. With the help of a PC-based controller, attempts are made herein to translate the corrective action from the intelligent module to the machine through an Ethernet based system.
