Abstract
We studied the relation between intellectual performance, family size and birth order. According to Zajonc's confluence model, we expected a decreasing performance with both family size and birth rank. Subjects were 893 students from technical high schools, aged from 15 to 18. Results do not confirm confluence model predictions. Intellectual performance measured by Cattell' s scale 3, appears only related with family size, and presents a break-even point. Students living in a one to three children family performed better than those living in a four or more children family. Within these two populations there is no relation between family size and performance. Family size and intellectual performance are discussed as related aspects of a whole social normative integration.
