Abstract

This study evaluated the integrity of five granular insecticide carriers in gizzards of house sparrows (Passer domesttcus). Bentonite clay and gypsum granules disintegrated very rapidly in gizzards, heat-treated clay and corncob particles were retained in gizzards for several hours, and silica granules were the most persistent. Granule integrity may influence granule consumption rates and thus should be considered in assessments of avian exposure to granular insecticides.
