Abstract

Assessment and treatment of pain in animals is essential for proper patient care. Good management should focus on anticipation of pain, early intervention, and evaluation of treatment response on an individual-patient basis. Accurate pain assessment in animals is challenging; however, the use of validated pain scales provides an objective measurement of pain and is important for treatment success. This chapter will present an approach to pain assessment in companion animals along with multimodal management of pain using both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic modalities which is considered superior to a single agent and is now considered standard of care.
