Abstract

Homeopathy can be well integrated into a complementary oncology concept. However, the existing scientific evidence concerning homeopathy should be presented more transparently, and improved by performing randomized placebo-controlled studies with sufficient patient numbers. An ongoing multicenter study at four hospitals in Austria, consisting of patients with advanced lung cancer fulfills this requirement. Although the mechanism of action underlying homeopathy is still not clear, the existing body of evidence does clearly indicate that its effect is beyond that of a placebo. A number of cases encountered and reported in daily work with tumor patients have shown that complementary measures such as homeopathy may yield striking results in individual cases. Our institution considers homeopathy one of several complementary measures which can be used in addition to modern evidence-based oncological treatment. Notably, homeopathy is better tolerated than conventional cancer treatment and improves the patient’s quality of life.
