Abstract

Patient-specific orders represent important processes in hospitals. With the introduction of computerised physician order entry, or the more comprehensive care provider order entry (CPOE), computer-assisted processes are beco ming widespread. The University Hospital Zurich (USZ) has implemented an integrated clinical information system which supports order entry for drug administration and many other clinical tasks. The system is used by the care team to document patient data and also for communication, coordination and clinical decision support. Reliable operation of computer-based clinical processes requires highly available systems, fallback concepts, wireless LAN and a comprehensive clinical system including sophisticated access rights and plausibility checks. Improvements have been introduced by CPOE thanks to (i) increased efficiency through the use of previously recorded data and predefined sets of orders, (ii) enhanced cooperation due to easier und more rapid data transfer, disposition of resources and logistics, and (iii) improved quality due to complete traceability, detailed registration of services rendered and clinical decision support including recommendations, guidelines and alerts.
