Abstract

This paper explains the background to the Integration of ice-core, marine and terrestrial records (INTIMATE) programme of the International Quaternary Union (INQUA) Palaeoclimate Commission. It reviews the aims and objectives of INTIMATE, summarises progress to date, and considers future research priorities and directions. It also provides a context for six research papers in this Special Issue of Quaternary Science Reviews that were presented at the INTIMATE symposium held at the INQUA Congress, Durban, South Africa in August, 1999.
