Abstract

This paper presents conditions which assure that a given demand function was generated by an upper semi-continuous or a continuous utility function defined on all of the commodity space. This generalizes earlier work of Hurwicz and Uzawa and others, which covered utility functions defined only on the range of the demand function. In the case of continuous utility, the new condition presented is far less restrictive than previous sufficient conditions.
