Abstract

This chapter provides an introduction to the series of case studies presented in the edited volume, Systems Thinking for Instructional Designers: Catalyzing Organizational Change. This chapter provides an overview of systems thinking terms and makes systems thinking concepts approachable to a general audience. It is meant to provide everyday practitioners a resource for strategies to create or influence change using systems thinking principles. Terms and concepts discussed include: organizational systems, interconnectedness, parts and wholes of systems, networking, social systems, systems change, systems process, mental models, iteration, feedback loops, complex systems, systems theory, and inputs and outputs. Though not comprehensive, this chapter can serve as an approachable resource for those wishing to incorporate systems thinking into their everyday change efforts.
