Abstract

This chapter explains the purpose and essential elements of Hyman Minsky's theory of capitalist development, then applies that theory to the US economy, identifying several stages from merchant capitalism to money manager capitalism. It concludes by identifying possibilities for future research and by suggesting that Minsky's theory provides a vital way to inject greater attention to finance into contemporary institutionalism.
