Integrating mental health into primary care

Abstract

Recent research findings on mental health problems in primary care are reviewed with regard to their frequency, severity and treatability in general practice. The type and nature of complaints presented to doctors and the methods of classifying and managing these disorders within primary care settings are also discussed. The need for future action and research in primary mental health care (such as mental health services research, training programmes and defining mental health targets) is outlined in the light of new paradigms.
