Abstract

This talk will focus on recent efforts aimed at integrating manmade nanostructures with nanoscale-biological structures including: integrating quantum dots (QDs) with nanoscale biological structures and biomolecules including peptides, proteins, antibodies, and DNA; integrating carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with biological structures and biomolecules including peptides, proteins, antibodies, and DNA; and chemical self-assembly of quantum dot ensembles with interconnecting biomolecules. Recent results for the Nanoengineering Research Laboratory (NERL) at the University of Illinois at Chicago will be emphasized. Applications will include: luminescent quantum dots as biovoltage sensing elements; and indirectbandgap quantum dots engineered for genetic manipulation of DNA.
