Abstract

Following winter wheat, there can be approximately a 90‐day fallow period with no crop N uptake and autumn soil temperatures >50°F, leading to increased residual soil NO3–N availability. Opportunities exist for incorporation of cover crops to assimilate residual autumn soil N and reduce the potential for N loss. The objective of this study was to quantify daikon radish and forage oat cover crop biomass and N uptake, cover crop impact on soil NO3–N concentration, and corn growth, grain yield, and profitability responses to N placement and timing combinations following cover crops.
