Abstract

The aim of this paper is to describe an integrated traffic management platform using geographical information system on transportation (GIS-T). Existing platforms are almost specially designed for particular traffic control systems, which could not satisfy the increasing demand on traffic facility management, traffic information distribution, and coordinated control among multi control systems. In this paper, three basic design principles of integrated traffic management platform are analyzed: (a) a single database that contains traffic flow data from multi control systems, urban spatial data from GIS, and traffic facility information; (b) GIS-T is the basic application and development software, also real-time traffic flow data and static attribute data are added on urban fundamental geographical data; (c) both urban traffic integrated management and traffic real-time control are on the same platform. Finally, a prototype platform is introduced, and principles are well embodied in the prototype according to the actual traffic situation of Beijing
