Abstract

In recent years point sources of pollution that have contaminated both surface and ground water supplies have been addressed and significant progress in cleaning up these sources has been made. As a result, emphasis has shifted to nonpoint sources of pollution that have become significant problems. This is emphasized by the fact that nitrates and pesticides are being increasingly discovered in ground and surface water supplies. This chapter describes the use of mathematical models used to simulate the movement of water and chemicals in receiving waters: ground water, surface runoff, and surface impoundments. As in the previous chapter comments will be confined to nonpoint source issues. The general features, structure, examples, and strengths and weaknesses of each are presented.
