Abstract
Advanced multi-system propulsion technology for passenger trains and locomotives' cross-border operation all over Europe is integrating latest IGBT semiconductors and control technology into traction and auxiliary supply. Reliability as well as operating and maintenance cost have been in the focus of system concept and product design. All high voltage circuits, power electronics and control units are integrated to a higher degree than with conventional existing arrangements, which results in unmatched power densities for the MITRAC traction and auxiliary power supply system. A lifecycle cost (LCC) oriented system design with fully controlled DC link voltage enables operation with minimal energy consumption. Moreover, the high degree of functional integration as well as the maintenance cost optimized design are contributing to lower manufacturing and maintenance costs, higher reliability, and reduced total space and weight. Current applications as the TRAXX MS locomotives Re484 (SBB) and E186 (ATC, CBRail) as well as the large number of delivered trains of the AGC family illustrate the successful application of these most advanced propulsion systems.
