Abstract

A novel printed antenna for digital television (DTV) signal reception in the portable media player (PMP) device is presented. The proposed is suitable to be integrated with the system ground plane of the PMP device. The proposed antenna comprises a driven strip and a coupled strip short- circuited to the system ground plane of the PMP device. With the integration of the proposed antenna with the system ground plane, a resonant loop path is formed and a one-wavelength resonant loop mode is generated. Further, in between the driven and coupled strips, there is a lengthened coupling gap which effectively lowers the antenna's one-wavelength resonant loop mode and leads to the excitation of a half-wavelength resonant loop mode. The two resonant loop modes are formed into a wide operating band to easily cover the DTV signal reception in the 470 ~ 806 MHz band. In addition, owing to the antenna's compact size and simple structure, the proposed antenna is promising to be concealed within the housing of the PMP device as an internal antenna. A design example is demonstrated, and obtained results are presented and discussed.
