Abstract

Integrated Physical Activity Campaign With Wearable Devices and Practitioner Consultation

Highlights

  • Our research group currently recommends increasing physical activity (PA) levels for improving mental health status

  • As shown in the article by Hodkinson et al,[1] the studies reviewed for pedometers vs accelerometers and fitness trackers were numerically uneven (26 vs 8 studies); the standardized mean difference (SMD) of accelerometers and fitness trackers (SMD, 0.92) was greater than that for pedometers (SMD, 0.68) but the difference was not statistically significant

  • Given the high heterogeneity in comparisons of pedometers as well as accelerometers and fitness tracker, both the SMD and 95% CIs for the I2 statistics were narrower for pedometers

Summary

Introduction

Our research group currently recommends increasing PA levels for improving mental health status. Such complexity is contrasted with providing a distance-tracking wearable device without consultative support. On the basis of the experience with individuals with type 2 diabetes[5] and cancer survivors,[6] we would not predict effective PA change in association with wearable devices if substantial personal support was not provided.
