Abstract

There is considerable history behind our endeavor in Pennsylvania to integrate biological control of the European red mite, Panonychus ulmi (Koch), and the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, with the chemical control of numerous insect and disease pests of apple. Of that history we stress the generous assistance given to us by the research entomologists at the Canada Department of Agriculture Research Station, Kentville, Nova Scotia, and the accomplishments of Dr. R. L. Horsburgh in conducting a survey of predators and in pursuing certain research objectives from September 1966 to December 1969, when he was a Research Assistant and Ph.D. candidate in entomology. We also acknowledge the financial assistance furnished through USDA Grant no. 12-14-100-9149(33) during the period March 1967 to 1Iarch 1970.
