Abstract

A freestanding general surgery program was established at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in 1978. This would be integrated with other local surgery programs to have a citywide integrated civilian and military general surgery residency program. The idea of having military residencies emerged with the recognized need to have a steady supply of military doctors and surgeons. The idea of integrating was fostered by educational and economic opportunities to the program. This article focuses on the evolution of this integrated program, the performance of its residents, the changes it has experienced, and a look at the future of military and integrated general surgery residency programs.
