Abstract

This paper presents a novel approach for the on-line bearing fault detection and condition monitoring. Instead of using externally mounted sensors, miniaturized force, temperature, and/or acoustic emission sensors are internally mounted in the bearing raceway. The physical dimensions of the sensor-integrated smart bearing are identical to those of the conventional bearing. The end product is a bearing with built-in self-diagnostic capabilities that can replace a conventional bearing without the need for a special mounting fixture. Furthermore, since the embedded sensors are located close to the source of a potential fault, problems due to the acoustic coupling between the bearing and the fixture, the probe and the machine are eliminated.
