Abstract
In Medium Voltage (MV) electrical power distribution systems, transition from conventional Voltage Transformers (VTs) to Low Power Voltage Transformers (LPVTs) is in progress. The LPVTs are based on resistive or capacitive divider and have been implemented as stand-alone products for metering and protection applications. VTs or LPVTs are installed in a switchgear and their outputs are shared among all the other electronics installed in the switchboard, it is a centralized architecture. The LPVTs output can be broadcasted by analog or digital approaches. The improvements in design and manufacturing of LPVTs and the evolutions of IEC standards aim at enhancing an evolution for voltage measurement architecture: from centralized to distributed or integrated architecture. LPVTs can be embedded in existing components, such as insulators or bushings, thus LPVTs can be installed in each switchgear. An innovative, simpler, and more robust distributed architecture is proposed in this paper to perform protection and control inside MV switchgears, without LPVT signal broadcasting
